This is a question I hear all the time so I’d like to answer it here once and for all! Having a camera on your first drone is a nice extra touch but it is not necessary. What’s necessary for your first flying steps is learning the basics of actually flying a drone. So, no, paying extra for a camera on your first drone is a no-no.
Like I already said above, Syma X5C is a easy to fly drone that perfectly fits your needs if you’re a first-time flyer. Not only is it made out of decent quality plastic (can’t expect premium build quality for this price) but it also sports a pretty decent 2.0MP camera (If the camera is an important factor to you, check out our list of best camera drones) that can provide you with decent quality images… as long as you don’t expect any masterpieces.
The Mavic Pro is an excellent drone for selfies. It is definitely the most qualified to take all sorts of selfies and to take them in the best quality of all the selfie drones listed in this review .
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a smartphone-brained drone, incidentally. Both the University of Pennsylvania and the Vienna University of Technology have made experimental one-off models, while California-based Labromance, Inc. recently ran an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign to finance production of its LAB (Living Aerial Bot) consumer drone.
So, with everything stated above, the conclusion is basically coming on its own – with the massive popularity of selfies, it was just a matter of time before first selfie-oriented drones hit the market. And it did not take them a lot of time. First, there were those tiny toy-grade drones with awful cameras which were marketed like selfie drones. Then, there was an uprising on the market with the introduction of Zerotech Dobby, Yuneec Breeze, DJI Spark and so on… This revolution is still going on and it does not seem like it will end anytime soon, especially with talks of DJI Spark 2 hitting the shelves next year!
This is a pretty compact-sized drone, sitting at 5.25” by 5.25”. There are crash guards installed, and it records to SD card, so the video is not really able to be viewed during flight. This may prevent many pilots from wanting it, but it is still known for it’s sturdy handling, and is a good model to learn the basics of flight with.
Amazon’s #1 best-seller in airplane model kits, the durable DBPOWER MJX X400W FPV Drone does 360-degree 3D flips and rolls and takes photos and videos. It has first-person view 720P HD real-time transmission, headless mode, plug-in interface replacement motors, LED lights for night flying, and an updated 3D split screen function that’s compatible with a 3D VR headset. The six-axis gyro with posture control has an integrated design for better stability and better photos. It has eight to nine minutes flying time and 120 minutes of charging time. It can be controlled from 100 meters away with the high capacity volume battery.
We cannot start this list without mentioning our favourite selfie-drone of all – the drones whose arms fold into to fit right in your pocket. If you want to see what this technology can do without spending a lot, this would be the perfect buy. Foldable & flexible aerofoils make the palm-sized drone compact, small and portable.
It does not have a “return to home” function, but for the price, has a decent camera, and high ranking reviews from many users. The transmitter will warn you of low battery, and the weight of this inexpensive drone is around 3.8 ounces. Here are some of the key features that will allow you to make the best purchasing decision:
To complete the package, the Breeze comes with built-in social media connectivity so you can instantly show everyone how amazing your holiday is with a simple tap of the app. All in all this is a great drone for Instagram fans but don’t let that fool you into thinking this is a gimmick – it produces great 4K images. One issue is that the battery runs down quickly – you’ll only get twelve minutes on a single 40-minute charge. At 100m, the range is quite a bit less than the Bebop 2 but certainly enough, given what this drone is for.
You can control this wildly fun little device from about 20-30 meters away, and the flight time is 4 to 5 minutes. The battery for the transmitter is 3 AAA’s, and these are not included. Definitely more of a toy but a very fun one at that, the Mokasi pocket drone is ideal for a stocking stuffer, birthday gift, or ongoing fun project for a one very interested in electronics.
Overall, the Bebop 2 is a superb choice of beginner drone. It’s easy to fly, it’s portable, and it’s safer than the original. It’s not without a few faults (see cons table below), but then no drone is perfect.
The latest release from DJI, the Chinese brand which currently sits atop the drone world, is a bit of a game-changer for one simple fact: it’s so small. The vast majority of drones that offer full HD video quality are significantly larger, meaning that they aren’t practical for use in many scenarios. The Spark easily fits in the palm of your hand and is light and portable with the included plastic case.
Even for the novice, it’s easy to handle, via the controller provided, using your phone or tablet for first-person view. It’s the Phantom’s impressive set of tricks that set it apart, however. Tap an object in the view of your phone and the drone will lock onto it as you fly around to capture footage from all angles. It can also track moving objects. Battery life is a respectable 25 minutes and the range is 5km, though we never got to test this last statistic.
SELFLY is based on existing technology, making the developmental risks low. Our experienced team has already developed a few working prototypes, which have been tested and perform well, providing us with feasibility of the product. This gives us confidence in SELFLY and its development.
The most frequent mistake I see novice flyers do is go full throttle on their first run. This is obviously a bad practice, especially with powerful drones that are too fast for beginners to handle. That’s why you should put your drone at the lowest rate possible and don’t force the throttle to unnecessary levels. You’ll thank me later!
Gimbals are extremely important when it comes to aerial footage recorded by drones. They are essentially small “camera holders” equipped with brushless motors that keep the mounted camera stable and level at all times. This effect is made true not only with brushless motor but with an anti-vibration mount as well. The combination of those 2 make up for an amazing stabilization system that has been used in professional photography and filmmaking for a long time now.
The biggest pro that this selfie drone has to offer is definitely the G-Sensor Mode. When enabled, the drone will follow you around automatically based on the way you move your smartphone, which is pretty neat!

The biggest pro that this drone has to offer would definitely have to the folding arms. When you fold them down the drone morphs into the size of a water bottle, making for easier, safer transportation.
In drone world, 480p cameras are most frequently seen on the lowest end models out there. Still, there are pricier drones that use 480p as well, although not for recording video but for the popular FPV live streaming.
In this mode, you switch to WiFi mode and connect your smartphone or tablet to the Mavic. This will of course take away some of the fine grained control that you get with the controller but makes things easier to manager by new pilots.
The Air Selfie Camera is a pocket-sized selfie drone, you can slide it into its phone cover and it recharges automatically. It can hover up to 20 meters away, and flies for roughly 3 minutes. Photos are taken by a 5MP camera and are stored on the built-in 4GB micro SD memory card.
Anyway, by no means is this a practical product, but it is a great example of how drone technology — 1080p video cameras and all — is trickling down to entirely unrelated, inexpensive gadgets. Maybe one day everything will have retractable propellers. The Selfly will be available sometime this quarter for $130; that price includes two batteries.
The following list names the best 5 drones for beginners with camera available in the marketplace at shockingly economical rates. Also make sure to check out the top drones under $100 dollars of 2018.
