Starting off with cheap (toy-grade) drones, when they completely run out of battery, they will, unfortunately, drop down from the sky. However, every drone has a low-battery alarm system in place. These are quite different but generally what you’ll be looking at is flashing LEDs on the drone, buzzing sound on your controller or some sort of a visual warning message on your smartphone’s app. Either way, you will be promptly notified.
Mavic’s vision positioning system includes paired GPS and GLONASS to give the quadcopter precise positioning both indoors and outdoors, and it comes with 8 more smart flight modes that make it easy for anyone to get expert quality shots:
Simply take the Byrd up in the air (make sure you calibrate the compasses beforehand) and rotate the camera/gimbal so that it points in your direction. Then, once you are at the best angle, simply press the Take Photo button and you’re as good as gold !
It also has an “Altitude Hold” function, which makes it super easy for beginners to fly, since this allows for stability in the air, and comes in handy when you’re trying to get just the right photograph.
They provide a massive amount of impact protection and are there to ensure your propellers (as well as the centerpiece of your drone) are 100% safe at all times. Still, this is not an invitation to smash Parrot AR 2.0 straight into a wall at full speed as that would probably render it unusable… plus your warranty won’t cover it. 😊
Wingsland S6 will rise up in the air and start following you around, allowing you to take the perfect selfie whenever you want. Orbit option is good too, but I suppose it’s more oriented toward selfie videos instead of mere photographs.
Moreover, H501S can be considered as a proper alternative to DJI’s Phantom 3 or perhaps Parrot’s Bebop 2. With its solid array of features on top of which is the built-in GPS system along with follow me mode. It features a smart battery that can endure roughly 18 minutes of air time, which puts it to our list of 10 drones with best flight time. That’s more than great for the price range and, when combined with the responsive controller (with an LCD display), makes up for the main selling points of the H501S.
Being on the lookout for the cheapest drone possible is not necessarily the worst thing you can do as a drone enthusiast: as long as you keep your expectations just a bit low, you may come out alright and have something to fly around that you’ll enjoy. The key is to go slow when you first get one out of the box, and not to let it be a speed race; if you are testing cheap drones over and over to see how they will handle crashes, you may get your wish of having a long-lasting possession!
How many times have you found yourself trying to fit twenty people or more in that group selfie? How many times have you tried squeezing in that beautiful sunset in your couple selfie? And how many times have you had to cut out that landmark while snapping one simple selfie?
Wifi FPV – this drone integrates with both iOS and Android smartphones to stream live video such that the drone pilot can see what the drone camera is seeing – because what kind of dronie would it be if you can’t see what picture you’re taking? 😉
The DJI Spark offers gesture recognition and obstacle avoidance technology, along with a 12MP camera and 16 minutes of flight time. Control Spark by using a mobile device and gesture controls or purchase a remote control sold separately. When paired with the new DJI goggles, users can experience real time FPV flying.
On your screen, a video game–style display overlays your flight video. This display contains telemetry data such as altitude and battery life, and perhaps even a mini map showing an overhead view of your drone’s position via GPS. If you’re connected to a touch screen, there may also be quick control functions like video and photo capture, as well as preset tricks and automatic commands including takeoff, hover and return home that make flying easier and safer.
And we’ve already seen what a leap in usability there has been – drones now need just a gesture to take a selfie. Drones don’t even need remotes sometimes – you can fly them with a smartphone app. Drones for selfies are obviously not going to be any different – they’re simply to fly, simple to take pictures with.
The first drone bearing a 4K camera worth mentioning is Typhoon H. As you can see above, it is made by Yuneec and it has 6 propellers. Yes, this is a mighty hexacopter with an aggressive appearance and godlike performance to go alongside it. So, for everyone looking for the real deal in terms of aerial imaging solution, Yuneec Typhoon H seems like a viable option. With that in mind, let’s see what does it bring to the table in terms of camera, features and specifications!
The Wingsland S6 has four folding arms and an ultra-thin body design, its compact form makes it easy to store and carry. Featuring a 13MP low distortion camera, mounted on a 3-axis gimbal for improved stability, the S6 is the world’s thinnest 4K drone. It can go up to 10 minutes on a single charge and its maximum operating range is around 100 meters.
The Cheerson CX-10 Mini is (super) small and durable, so even if you do end up losing a few propellers, spare parts are inexpensive. Despite its size, Cheerson still managed to pack a 6-axis flight control board in there for advanced maneuvers.
Always read the instructions thoroughly before getting started. If there are any instructional videos, you should go through those, as well. You may think that flying the drone is a piece of cake but if you’re not careful, you risk damaging a rather expensive gadget. Chances are that you don’t make the first flight your last one. Take your time and prepare yourself before going out there.
The Syma X11C Quadcopter is one of the most affordable quadcopter options a beginner UAV pilot has. With its 6-axis gyro direction stabilizer flight control system, 3D lock to help for more precise flying, and blade protector to help with minor crashes, this is a great inexpensive quadcopter for beginners.
One thing that I almost forgot to mention is its miniature HD camera. Interesting fact – it supports FPV but only up to 20 meters. If you think that’s low, operating range is just 30 meters which doesn’t breathe much confidence in its specifications.
Moreover, Mavic Pro represents the breakthrough when it comes to flight duration. While all of its miniature competitors offer up to 15 minutes of airtime, DJI took it one step further and doubled it to almost half an hour. If we are to be more precise with our numbers here, the exact measure goes somewhere around the 27-minute mark. That and amazing 7 kilometers of flight range are the true selling points of this little fella who is, at least in my honest opinion, the best all-around drone with video camera for shooting breathtaking scenes.
DJI Mavic Pro is very easy to fly despite its high quality and sophistication. My advice is to stay well away from the Sport Mode until you’re comfortable and familiar with all the drone’s basic features.
Did you know that the most powerful device for controlling and tracking your vehicle may already be in your pocket? DroneMobile connects your vehicle to your smartphone – so that you can remote start, secure, and track your vehicle from virtually anywhere.

Now I’m going to tell you a bit more about its drawbacks. First of all, it is powered by a mere 850mAh LiPo battery which can power it up for roughly 8 to 10 minutes which is way below Spark’s numbers. Additionally, operating distance goes on for roughly 60-70 meters (in my own personal experience) even though the official specifications claim 100 meters. I’ve also got some bad news for all of you wanting to enjoy FPV with Kidcia’s quadcopter – video transmission range is only cca 20 meters which is way below my initial expectations…
Very few drones offer more than 10 to 20 minutes of battery life, so an easily swapped battery can give you more flying time without hassle. This tends to be a feature of more expensive models, with a spare battery typically costing more than $100. Cheap drones (under about $200) usually have built-in batteries that can’t be swapped out.
It also has a number of automated flying modes, including an “Active Track” setting that follows a predefined subject from the air, a “TapFly” mode that lets you direct the drone by tapping points on its live feed, and the old “return to home” function, which does as its name suggests. There are others, and all of them make the device less intimidating if you’re just looking to have some fun.
The ZEROTECH Dobby is another smartphone-controlled drone, this pill-shaped drone with folding props is small enough to fit in your back pocket or carry in a bag. While using the app you will get a first person view from the Dobby’s camera. You can also use the app to post your drone selfies to Facebook or other social media quickly and easily.
We will regularly update this list with new and excited drones for beginners, or just when we find less expensive purchasing options. We were happy to add the Uvify OOri and the new DJI Mavic Air to the list, otherwise, a few price adjustments this month.
We cannot start this list without mentioning our favourite selfie-drone of all – the drones whose arms fold into to fit right in your pocket. If you want to see what this technology can do without spending a lot, this would be the perfect buy. Foldable & flexible aerofoils make the palm-sized drone compact, small and portable.
