Fully integrated with the smartphone app which controls it, you’re ready to upload your pictures as soon as you take them. Once you’ve taken your photos and videos with the Yuneec Breeze, downloading and sharing via social media is quick and easy. Just select the photo or video you would like to share and choose which social network you would like to share to and you’re done – all without leaving the app interface. It’s that simple.

One of the technologies that makes pricier drones more stable and easier to fly is GPS. With it, a drone can use satellites to help it know where it is in space, so it can just stop and hover in place if you let go of the sticks. It can also allow the drone to return to where it took off from with the press of a button or if its battery starts to get too low. And that’s exactly what you’re getting with the Sky Viper V2450GPS.

Just unpack and fly – it is often not that easy. It may take a few days for an untrained pilot to figure out how to control the drone, keep it stable in the air. A crash here and there is almost guaranteed in the first flight tests. So, keeping all this in mind, beginner models should be robust and not too expensive. In addition, you should make sure that you can easily find and buy spare parts, such as propellers (they are usually the first victims of those falls and crashes).

But even with all those annoyances, hooking yourself in and seeing the world from the sky above is a thrill that no mediocre camera tech can fully drag down. All the nice things we said about the standard Nano QX above still apply here, so the quad is still approachable and surprisingly nimble at the same time. Its video feed rarely stutters or lags. And if the included goggles bother you too much, you can always grab a higher-res pair to replace them. Practice without the headset first, but for an instantly ready leap into FPV flying, this is a good get.

Top speed isn’t far off either, clocking in at roughly 35km/h. FOr such a small drone, this is more than a welcome addition. However, if you are looking for something with extreme speed on its side, then take a closer look at AirDog ADII which is listed as the honorable mention.

While we’re mentioning the controller, it’s noteworthy to add its similarity to DJI’s. It’s classier to be honest, but lacks that feeling of top quality that’s present with DJI’s controllers. Despite that, Upair One is still an excellent drone with approximately 800 meters of seamless flight range. If your FPV (all you need to know about FPV Goggles and Drones is here) is turned on, you can expect roughly half of that which is still good.

Priced at about $50 at the time of writing this article is a simpler cheaper copy of the Dobby Selfie Drone. Of course, at this price point you can expect the Elfie drone to lack the advanced features of the more expensive selfie drones, and it is true. The JJRC H37 or “Elfie” does not have GPS nor does it have a gimbal or an adjustable camera, it even uses brushed motors. All of this of course to cut down the cost.

Because this is a beginner’s drone buying guide, we’ll stick to pre-built, ready-to-fly (RTF) quadcopters. Other types of UAVs can be more expensive, or they’re too complicated for the neophyte drone pilot. Even if you’re looking to buy a special drone for a more specific use case, like live-streaming aerial videography or doing three-dimensional land mapping, you’ll still need to master the basics. A quadcopter is a great UAV to learn on!

Another solid mid-range option, the Wingland S6 is a super compact selfie drone with a 4k camera with electronic stabilisation. It folds down to a very compact form factor and it durable enough to throw in your bag – check prices on Amazon

This is a great drone to practice piloting skills, but that’s about all. It’s small and light and handles crashes pretty well. It doesn’t come with a camera, though, and nor is there a place to attach one.

DJI more recently released their new small drone, designed for a multitude of uses for the drone enthusiast or casual consumer, the DJI Spark. Spark is very versatile, you can control it by mobile device, remote control, or even just with your hands. In between the completely gesture based controls and the advanced autonomous flight techniques, called DJI Quickshot, Spark is an attractive machine to a first time pilot.
